Hotel Update
The Villas of Grand Cypress Golf Resort is in the middle of a six-month restoration/enhancement project on its South Course, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1984.
The nine-hole South Course complements two other nine-hole courses, the North and East courses, and the 18-hole New Course, which is Nicklaus¹ tribute to the famed Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.
³Because our normal offering is 45 holes of golf, we can keep 36 holes of diverse and challenging golf available while we work on the South Course,² said Director of Golf Maintenance/Superintendent Tom Alex.
Play will resume on the South Course in October. The project includes restoring greens and tee boxes to their original dimensions, improving drainage under bunkers, installing irrigation and building new retaining walls. Fairways, rough and tees will be replanted with 419 Bermudagrass, and greens and collars will feature Mini Verde grass.
“After more than 20 years of play, this is an opportunity to fine-tune an already excellent course,” Alex said.
Readers of Conde Nast Traveler have placed The Villas of Grand Cypress Golf Resort on their ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts’ list (46th overall and #1 in Orlando), Florida Monthly readers have named it Florida’s Best Golf Resort’ and Golf Digest awarded it a region-high 4 1/2 stars for excellence on its ‘Best Places to Play 2006-2007’ list.
