‘I messed up’: ATC error possible cause of LaGuardia crash
A full ground stop was placed on New York’s LaGuardia Airport overnight after an Air Canada Express jet crashed into a fire truck while landing.
All flights in and out of LaGuardia airport were halted.
The Bombardier CRJ-900, operated by regional partner Jazz Airlines, has been badly damaged.
It was carrying about 72 passengers.
Two pilots were confirmed dead and 41 people were rushed to hospitals for treatment including two firefighters.
One of LaGuardia’s two runways reopened Monday afternoon.
An air traffic controller reported said ‘I messed up.’
The fire truck was reportedly given clearance to cross the runway and moments later was ordered to stop.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will join in the investigation with the US counterpart accident investigation agency NTSB.
The runway where the crash happened is expected to stay closed for ‘days’ during the investigation, said NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy.
