India airfares capped as domestic flights resume
All Indian airlines have opened bookings ahead of the resumption of domestic flight service from May 25.
Last week the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued new standard operating procedures for airports to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Capacity is limited to about a third of normal levels and fares have been capped to ensure no price gouging for the first three months.
Fares are capped at INR6,000 for short flights and up to INR18,600 for flights of three hours or longer.
Air regulator DGCA has approved a set number of flights each Indian airline can operate.
Only routes to major cities are allowed for now which include Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Pune.
The civil aviation ministry has asked the elderly, pregnant women and those with existing medical issues not to fly.
According to local media there has been a surge in bookings over the weekend with major OTAs such as Yatra and EaseMyTrip.com reporting high booking volumes.
