India rape victim settles second Uber lawsuit
Global ride hailing giant Uber says it has settled a civil lawsuit brought by an Indian rape victim.
It is the second settlement for the woman, after she was sexually assaulted in Delhi by a Uber driver back in 2014.
The driver was sentenced to life imprisonment and the victim settled out of court with Uber.
However a second lawsuit was filed after it was claimed company executives colluded with local police to obtain her confidential medical records illegally.
Uber fired its Asia Pacific business chief Eric Alexander earlier this year for sharing the medical records with other executives.
In what was arguably Uber’s biggest crisis yet in India, the lawsuit filed in the US alleged ‘Uber executives duplicitously and publicly decried the rape, expressing sympathy for plaintiff, and shock and regret at the violent attack, while privately speculating, as outlandish as it is, that she had colluded with a rival company to harm Uber`s business," it said.
The incident also sparked a probe by the U.S. Department of Justice over whether the company had violated US bribery laws under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Details of the settlement were not disclosed.
