India regains top air safety rating from US regulators
The Indian aviation industry has received a welcome boost with news the US Federal Aviation Administration has finally upgraded the country’s safety rating.
This will allow Indian carriers to increase the number of flights they operate to the US.
The awarding of category 1 status again follows the downgrading to category 2 in January last year.
US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said corrective action had been made but did not specify which areas were of most concern to US regulators.
The Indian aviation regulator had recruited more flight operations inspectors recently and streamlined other safety procedures.
Air India and jet Airways are the only India based carriers currently flying to the US.
"The United States Government commends the Government of India for taking corrective action to address the safety oversight issues identified during the safety assessment process," Foxx said after a meeting with India’s civil aviation minister in Delhi.
