Indonesia reports first cases of coronavirus

Indonesia has finally confirmed cases of coronavirus.

It has two positive cases in Depok, near Jakarta after close contact with a Japanese woman who later tested positive for the virus in Malaysia.

The mother and daughter are in isolation in a Jakarta hospital.

The 31-year old daughter had twice sought medical attention since mid-February.

A test was eventually carried out after news that the Japanese tourist tested positive.

"Both are in good condition, they don’t have serious breathing difficulties," said health minister Terawan Agus Putranto.

Indonesia becomes the 69th country to report coronavirus.

The country’s testing protocols have been questioned in recent weeks with various studies and health bodies bemused why a country the size of Indonesia had not had any reported cases.

It has tested only a fraction of people compared with neighbours like Singapore and Malaysia.

However the government maintains it has made all the necessary contingency plans to deal with a large outbreak.

"The government is serious in dealing with cases by preparing more than 100 hospitals equipped with isolation rooms and tools that meet international standards," President Joko Widowo said.
