Italian call for mandatory use of ski helmets
Italian authorities are reportedly ready to step up a campaign to ensure the safety of skiers by calling for the mandatory use of helmets by skiers and snowboarders alike.
According to The Times, the proposal comes after a series of accidents at Italian resorts, including one in which a man was killed by a snowboarder “careering down at a crazy speed”.
The newspaper reports that recently introduced regulations mean that under-14s are obliged to wear helmets, while skiers and boarders are subject to fines of up to 250 euros for offences including skiing while drunk, dangerous skiing and “failing to give way to skiers from the right”.
Gaetano Coppi, president of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, is quoted as saying: “Everybody should wear a helmet. Problems arise because some people on the slopes are wearing protection and others are not.”
He reportedly alluded to the fact that new rules forcing motorbike riders to wear helmets have been widely respected, adding: “The same should apply to our ski slopes.”
