Italians feel the need for speed
Italy: Motorway limits to be raised in effort to reduce road deaths
Italy seems likely to raise its motorway speed limits to 93 miles per hour in an effort to reduce the number of accidents on its roads. The country has one of the worst road safety records in Europe; some 6,400 people died in accidents last year compared to 3,500 in the UK – but the transport ministry has stated that just nine per cent of the country’s road smashes are caused by speeding, and that in many cases it is 2Safer to drive faster”. If parliament approves the new ruling – which seems likely – the change will come into effect at the start of 2004, raising the speed limit from 130kmh to 150kmh. According to The Sunday Times the police are questioning the wisdom of such a move in a country where “most drivers believe they are closely related to Michael Shumacher”.
