Caribbean island heads list for most likely holiday spots to get robbed

The Daily Telegraph has published a list of its top 10 holiday destinations – for getting mugged.

The newspaper has taken its list from the results of the annual Personal Safety Survey, compiled by Mercer Human Resource Consulting. The consultants actually rate some 215 cities around the world, rating Luxembourg the safest and Bangui, Central African Republic, last – but the Telegraph has distilled the information to come up with the 10 worst-rated holiday destinations. Cities whose ranking might have been affected by war, terrorism or SARS have not been included.

Kingston, Jamaica comes top of the newspaper’s list, with crime against tourists increasing despite government efforts to increase security. Travel to and from the airport “can be dangerous”. Rio de Janeiro comes second, “crime levels remain high, exacerbated by police corruption and inaction”, with South Africa’s Cape Town in third place, “street crime remains serious and guns are a part of everyday life”.

The rest of the top 10 is as follows: 4. Mexico City; 5. St Petersburg, Russia; 6. Buenos Aires, Argentina; 7. Bangkok, Thailand; 8. Washington, USA; 9. Rome, Italy; 10. Athens, Greece.
