Jetstar, SIA on top of the world

KUALA LUMPUR – AirAsia was quick off the mark to announce that it has been voted as the Best Low-Cost Airline in Asia in 2007 by Skytrax Research.

What confused us a bit here at TravelMole was AirAsia’s announcement that it had won the award in the “regional worldwide” category.

Closer inspection of the results showed that Jetstar was the overall winner as the Best Low Cost Airline globally, as well as the best in Australia/Pacific.

Still, let’s not take anything away from fast-expanding Air Asia, whose chief executive Tony Fernandes, chirped, “We want the world to feel our presence. This award only serves to remind us that we are the leading low fare, no frills airline in the region, and that we will continue to set a rigorous course for all others to follow.”

Singapore Airlines was named Skytrax Airline of the Year 2007. SIA was a previous winner in 2004.

Runner-up to SIA was Thai Airways (up from 4th in 2006), followed by Cathay Pacific (2003 & 2005 winner). Qatar Airways came in 4th (a new entrant to the Top 5 group, 6th in 2006), and Qantas was ranked in 5th position.
