Kenya minister announces tourist board revamp
Kenya’s tourism minister Dan Mwazo swept aside controversy over his appointment of a new managing director of the Kenya Tourist Board to announce a restructure of the KTB to focus on key markets, including the UK.
Mwazo, whose decision to replace KTB managing director Muriithi Ndegwa with Nzioka-Mbithi has angered stakeholders in Kenya, said a number of brand managers would be appointed within the KTB by January to promote different tourism products including safaris, beach resorts, agrotourism and events.
"These brand managers will decide which markets they want to promote to different markets and put together promotions for that country," he said. "Kenya is about more than beaches and safaris, we want to promote agrotourism, homestays, cultural tours, shopping and a lot of other types of holidays."
Mwazo admitted the country had an image problem in the UK, from where business has fallen 2% so far this year following attacks by Somali pirates close to beach resorts and riots in Mombasa.
Speaking at World Travel Market, Mwazo said: "Tour operators here are telling me there is some concern about security, but they still love Kenya. We need to get the message across that we have improved security, we are making a lot of arrests, and today Mombasa is as safe as London."
