Little Rock: in the center of it all
Little Rock, Arkansas’ capital has a central location that allows you to gain a full
range of Arkansas’ attractions and natural beauty. Arkansas’ six national park
sites, 2.5 million acres of national forests, culture and nature’s bountiful display, extend from the ridges of the ancient Ouachita and Ozark mountains to the Delta flatlands, allowing Little Rock to be the cultural bloom within its center.
Debuting in 2005, the Episphere, a state-of-the-art digital dome, part of the Aerospace Education Center, allows everyone to become immersed in the sights of the universe. Dedicated to teaching and engaging viewers, the Aerospace Education Center takes visitors through the human body, tours of the universe black holes and many other scientific phenomena. The facility has 150 full-motion seats with 360 full dome video and new scientific productions trails, every month that aim to amaze and teach.
Catching a view in Little Rock won’t be difficult with the new $12.5-million Big
Dam Bridge. Located over Murray Lock and Dam, The Pulaski County Pedestrian
and Bicycle Bridge has a 14-foot-wide deck that extends 3,463 feet across the
Arkansas River. It connects 7,000 acres of various parklands and 17 miles of river trails so that anyone can get to the scenic wonders of this city.
The bridge sponsors events such as the weekend-long 5K run/walk in September
and the Big Dam Bridge 100-mile bicycle trek taking place in March. Groups who
want to participate in the ride are welcome to attend the event, which takes
riders through central Arkansas.
Getting a glimpse of Little Rock can’t be any easier than on Arkansas Queen. This 1950s restored Riverboat has one of the most informative ventures for visitors. The Captain’s commentary on Little Rock’s rich history guides you down the 1,460-mile Arkansas River. The commercially navigable portion measures 445 miles from where it joins the Mississippi River to the Port of Catoosa, near Tulsa, Okla. From the ship, you can see Little Rock’s metropolitan skyline, the capitol building, beautiful parks, the Clinton Center and much more. Lunch and dinner cruises are also offered here.
