London bound flight crashes in India
A London bound plane has crashed in India just moments after take off.
Air India Flight AI171 departed Ahmedabad and was bound for London Gatwick.
Moments later it crashed with smoke billowing from the plane.
The Boing Dreamliner jet was carrying 242 passenger and 10 crew.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today,” the airline posted on social media.
“At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates.”
There is no further news at this moment regarding casualties or if there are any survivors
Indian TV channels have broadcast footage of the crash, showing a huge fireball on impact and damage to buildings.
India media cited eyewitness reports that an engine was on fire and then followed a loud explosion.
Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said: We are still gathering information and will issue a detailed statement soon.”
“Deeply saddened by the Air India tragedy in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the families affected. All possible assistance is being provided,” Prime Minister Modi said.
