London set for tube strike
London’s underground train system is expected to be hit by a 24-hour strike as from 6.30pm today, with around 80 per cent of services likely to be cancelled.
The industrial action by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union was confirmed yesterday after talks between union leaders and London Underground bosses broke down after 20 minutes.
According to the Daily Telegraph, union members are expected to walk out at 6.30pm and not return to work for 24 hours and, while the Docklands Light Railway and Network Rail services are not expected to be affected, much of London – including tube links to Heathrow – is expected to be affected by the strike.
The newspaper reports that the GBP5 London congestion charge will still have to be paid by motorists entering the centre of the city.
London Underground is reportedly anticipating “severe disruption” and is advising people to walk where possible and to leave extra time for journeys.
