Los Angeles to host 2028 Olympic Games
The city of Los Angeles has struck a deal with rival city Paris and International Olympic Committee to host the 2028 Olympic Games.
In a first of its kind agreement, LA gave up its battle for the 2024 Games allowing Paris a free run while LA will be awarded the 2028 games unopposed.
It still needs official approval from the IOC which will vote on the agreement next month.
In exchange for holding off for four years, Olympic officials will advance funding to the city which LA city officials say could eventually exceed $2 billion.
That is because there is such a long wait before the Olympic torch finally arrives.
The IOC agreed to give the city a $180-million advance to cover costs for the additional four years of planning time.
"This deal was too good to pass up," LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a press conference.
"For the first time in a generation, the Olympics are coming back to the United States," President Trump said in a statement. "And I am proud to support LA 2028."
While Olympic officials talk up the landmark three-way agreement, not everyone is pleased.
NOlympics, a group opposing the Games, called it ‘a complete miscarriage of anything remotely resembling democracy.’
