Preliminary figures from Europe’s second largest airline Lufthansa show that it made a loss of E754m in the 12 months to December 2001.

This compares to a profit in the previous year of E1.2billion, with the poor performance due the downturn in air travel following September 11 combined with the economic downturn. However Lufthansa just managed to stay in profit at the operating level.

Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Jürgen Weber said: “We have adopted the right course, which we must maintain, in order to emerge stronger from the crisis.”

The company also announced the appointment of Wolfgang Mayrhuber as deputy chairman, effective April 1.
