Lyft rolls out Green Mode’ for electric vehicle rides
Lyft customers can now start requesting more eco-friendly rides.
Starting off in Seattle, Lyft riders can turn on the ‘Green Mode’ and select only a hybrid or electric vehicle.
Lyft plans to roll it out beyond Seattle to other US cities during this year.
It is part of the Green Cities Initiative which has plans to significantly boost the number of electric cars on the ride sharing platform.
"Replacing gasoline-powered cars with EVs is a significant step forward in our efforts to fight climate change, and to improve the quality of life in our cities," the company said.
Lyft says all EVs will be recharged using renewable energy.
To boost its fleet of EVs, Lyft is ramping up the Express Drive initiative rental program for eco-friendly vehicles.
The long term rental scheme offers drivers unlimited miles, inclusive maintenance costs, and insurance cover.
It is touting higher earnings due to the lower fuel costs.
It estimates about half the operating costs compared to gasoline vehicles.
"Combining lower fuel costs with affordable rental rates, we anticipate that individual drivers can save hundreds of dollars per month."
The Express Drive program is available in Seattle and Atlanta and Lyft plans to expand it nationwide.
