Major League Baseball heads for Sydney
Representatives from the Arizona Diamondbacks have landed in Sydney in preparation for the Major League Baseball (MLB) opening series clash, to be held in the harbour city in March next year.
Diamondback player Paul Goldschmidt arrived this week with club president and CEO, Derrick Hall, for a media meet and greet at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The Diamondbacks first baseman tested his skills, pitching and batting against Aussie cricketers Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc, as both baseball and cricket balls were pitched around the grounds of the SCG.
The pre-match tour of Goldschmidt and Hall will be followed by a second promotional tour, when further representatives from both the Arizona Diamondbacks and LA Dodgers arrive in Sydney later in the month.
Two matches will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 22 and March 23.
Earlier this year, the NSW Government through Destination NSW, its tourism and major events agency, won the rights for Sydney to host the Opening Series of Major League Baseball in 2014 – the first time such a match will be held in Australia and only the sixth time it’s been held outside the United States.
