Majorca hotel hit by bug
Suspicions that swimming pool could be infected with cryptosporidium
More than 40 British holidaymakers have been taken to hospital in Majorca after being taken ill at their hotel.
According to newspaper and television reports, there are suspicions that the swimming pool at the Pins Aparthotel in the resort of Alcudia may have been infected with the water-born cryptosporidium bug; the hotel’s pool has been drained and cordoned off so it can be checked out, and is likely to be closed for up to two weeks.
Out of those people taken ill, four were last night detained in hospital, while specialists from Barcelona have been called in to investigate the source of the bug. Cryptosporidium causes vomiting, diarrhoea and severe fever.
Television reports on ITV’s GMTV programme this morning suggest dozens of families want to leave the resort; however, the hotel’s management pointed out that there are more than 2,100 guests and that the number suffering is relatively small.
A spokesman for Airtours Holidays told the Daily Mail: “We are taking every precaution and being very careful.”
