Make holidays greener the best yet
With just over a week to go, this year’s Make Holidays Greener campaign has been the best yet.
Here’s a quick round-up of what’s been going on recently…
To mark the importance of sustainable tourism, all of Thomas Cook’s kids clubs, from all source markets operating in Tunisia, are staging green events as part of their weekly program for Summer 2012 and have been marking ‘Make holidays greener Month’ in July.
Teams in both Sahara Beach and Mahdia Beach created some fantastic collages, to display in the reception areas, all about endangered animals in Africa. These will remain in place for the whole month along with the Travel Life posters.
Meanwhile, the KidsWorld and Family Welt teams in Sahara Beach came together for a Recycle Rumble. With children from Germany, the UK, Holland, Belgium, France and Tunisia all joining in, the focus of the session was to make a life-size ‘Hatch the Turtle’ from recycled items, make animal face masks and use recycled materials to make models of a monkey, camel and rhino.
There were also live tigers, monkeys, lions, zebras, giraffes and snakes joining in the fun, courtesy of the face painting. area on its Holiday Extras TV channel, helping to inform staff and visitors on the benefits of ‘going green’
Around 40 people from the travel industry, representing businesses including Inside Japan and Odyssey World, got together at a special green-themed Westcountry Travellers networking event at Bristol’s Clifton Lido to celebrate Make Holidays Greener Month on Thursday 19 July.
Thomson Holidays and First Choice have been supporting the campaign by turning their Facebook pages green, putting out customer tannoy announcements with greener holiday tips on flights and writing blogs to educate eco-curious customers. TUI UK & Ireland is also planning an eco volunteer day and a range of other activities to ensure Amke Holidays Greener Month goes out with a bang…
Meanwhile, Cosmos Holidays created a special Make Holidays Greener flyer to highlight its own green deals and to share eco tips…
Travelmatters‘ Karen Simmonds awarded pupil Grace with a prize for the best Make Holidays Greener poster in a design a poster competition in front of 400 classmates.
In conjunction with The Travel Foundation’s ‘Make Holidays Greener’ Campaign, Adventure Alternative is publishing a Sustainability Handbook. The book will soon be branded, published and distributed to clients to help the company carry out its commitment to responsible tourism
There has been huge support for the campaign this year, with many new faces coming on board.
Social media has played an even bigger role in the campaign and the hashtag #greenerhols has allowed those involved to share what they’ve been up to with others.
It is hoped the campaign will create a lasting legacy, beyond July, and that companies will continue to display the Make Holidays Greener posters and carry on with their green initiatives throughout the year. If you’ve been involved in Make Holidays Greener, or have any ideas on how we can make it even better next year, the Travel Foundation would love to hear from you. Please send your feedback and suggestions to [email protected]
