Make It So engineers can die happy

Tuesday, 28 Jan, 2010 0

SYDNEY – Engineers Australia is launching a campaign in February where they’re calling on all Australians – any age – to submit any idea (big or small) to be ‘made so’.

They want the travel and tourism industry to provide ideas for the campaign.

The unique competition is a part of a new public awareness campaign by Engineers Australia’s that aims to lift the curtain on what engineers actually do, by involving everyday Australians in the world of engineering in a fun and entertaining way.

The campaign is based on the notion that engineers and engineering teams ‘make it so’ by listening to what people want and communities need and turn these wishes into reality.

From bridges to Blackberrys, drinking water to the Water Cube and plastic knees to petrol-free cars – engineers ‘make it so.’

Examples of pre campaign ideas have consisted of, ‘make it so I can travel anywhere in the world in two hours’ and ‘Make it so I can pack my clothes without making any creases.’

Or conservation angles – ‘make it so the Great Barrier Reef doesn’t disappear’ (illustration attached).

Throughout February, ideas, dreams and wishes people would like to be ‘made so’ can be submitted via the website.

Visitors to the site will be able to view every idea that has been sent in and vote for, or comment on, entries.

Engineers Australia will then select the most interesting and valuable submission and one idea will be ‘made so’ by an engineering team.

“The ideas, wishes and dreams submitted can be simple or profound, lofty or practical. No idea is too big or too small," said Peter Taylor, chief executive, Engineers Australia.

The contest will run until May, a finalist will be selected each week based on popularity with the final winner being announced in August.
