Malta’s Azure Window is gone
One of Malta’s most famous attractions, the Azure Window rock arch, has collapsed into the sea.
The limestone arch on Gozo island fell during a heavy storm, according to reports.
Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said the news was ‘heartbreaking’.
Only four years ago, a study found that while the rock was suffering from erosion, it was not in danger of collapsing. However, officials had recently introduced signs to stop visitors walking across it, and fines for those who disobeyed.
The Azure Window has featured in several films and appeared in the first episode of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.
