Man held after killing of British backpacker
A man has been arrested by police in Thailand after the brutal murder of a British backpacker.
The body of Scots-born Mark Lemetti was found on Friday in a rubber plantation near Sungai Kolok, a town on the Thai border with Malaysia.
The 24-year-old is believed to have been robbed and killed before being dumped in the plantation, the BBC reported.
The accused man, who lives in the area, has been charged with murder, theft and residing in Thailand without proper documentation.
Mr Lemetti had been touring South East Asia for a number of weeks and was due to return home. The BBC said his father was set to fly to Thailand soon.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised Britons against travelling to Sungai Kolok and other parts of Thailand’s southern provinces. The town has been hit twice this year by terrorist bomb attacks, including a blast outside a bar in March, which injured 30 people.
The Foreign Office website says: “Thailand shares with the rest of South-East Asia a threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate and against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.”
