Man made hoax bomb call to delay plane for friend
A British man has been accused of making a hoax bomb scare to give a friend more time to find her passport.
A report in today’s Daily Telegraph cites the case of 33-year-old Ilyas Savas, who stands accused of making a false bomb threat against an airline.
The newspaper reports that Savas is accused of making the call from England to a hotel in Philadelphia when Hatice Ceylan, of New Jersey, discovered she did not have her passport and was likely to miss her flight.
The court heard that after the call, two flights from Philadelphia to London were delayed, with passengers being evacuated from both aircraft to allow a search to take place. The source of the hoax was discovered when Ceylan tried to obtain a refund on her tickets, which were both non-redeemable.
The Telegraph reports that the pair could face a 10-year prison sentence and a fine of up to £300,000 if they are convicted.
