Man sneaks through baggage carousel, causes security scare at Miami Airport
Miami Airport officials have started a security probe after a man managed to squeeze through a baggage carousel and into restricted areas on the tarmac.
The unnamed man was seen on CCTV footage jumping on the conveyor belt and brazenly crawling through the baggage chute.
He is next seen on camera being chased by multiple airport workers on the tarmac before being apprehended.
The video was leaked to the Miami Herald by an unnamed source.
"Had there been a plane at that gate, this individual could have entered the plane or had access to the aircraft. This is a very restricted area, only accessible to some with very limited access, and he was able to gain access. Very concerning," the source told the Herald.
The source said the man accessed a highly restricted area off-limits to many airport workers.
To get to the baggage area, he walked past a security checkpoint that wasn’t manned near the American Airlines ticket kiosk.
The man had reportedly been involuntarily committed to a hospital for mental health evaluation just a few days before the incident at the weekend.
In a statement to Fox TV, American Airlines praised the ‘quick actions of our colleagues in Miami who helped alleviate this security issue.’
Airport spokesman Marc Henderson said the incident was still under investigation.
