March of the Living takes 10,000 from Poland to Israel

An annual educational trip taking Jewish students on a tour of their roots celebrates its 25th anniversary this April, with a record attendance of 10,000 students from around the world.

The March of the Living is designed to teach the history of the Holocaust by following the route from Poland to Israel, "examining the roots of prejudice, intolerance and hate."

The two-week trip begins April 3 in Warsaw, Poland, and moves to Israel on April 10.

It takes students on a historical trek from the Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps, where six million Jews died during World War II, to Israel, where many survivors eventually found a home.

Students visit ancient and modern sites in both countries, hear the stories of survivors, and celebrate Israel’s Independence Day in their people’s ancient homeland.

This year, former Israeli Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a child survivor of the Holocaust, will address the students, as will Benny Gantz, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, whose parents were Holocaust survivors.

Established in 1988, the March of the Living has brought more than 160,000 Jewish youth "on a life-changing journey into their heritage."
