Massive airport opens in China
China has opened a new airport in its industrial south yesterday in a move that could threaten Hong Kong’s importance throughout the region.
According to The Times, Baiyun International Airport, in Guangzhou, is the country’s largest. It cost some £1.3 billion to build and will eventually be able to handle 80 million passengers a year, the newspaper reports.
The Times reports that while Hong Kong is still an important hub for the region, with its airport still serving 35 million passengers a year, the new facility already has a capacity of 27 million and is thought to be planning a rigorous expansion of its international services.
