Mechanical problems blamed for errant airplane death
The investigation is continuing but early reports indicated mechanical problems were likely involved when a Southwest Airlines plane skidded off a snowy Chicago runway and plowed thorough a fence-like barrier to a busy street, killing a six-year-old boy.
The child was traveling in a car. The crash also injured upwards of a dozen people.
The pilot of a Southwest Boeing 737 plane told safety investigators there were mechanical problems when the plane attempted to land during a light snowfall.
Midway Airport, just southwest of downtown Chicago, was hit with 9 inches of snow before and after the accident.
Other planes were landing before and after the incident.
No alarms were raised on the plane’s cockpit voice recorder, investigators said.
