Melbourne Airport back to normal after blackout

An AAP report says that Melbourne Airport was back to normal yesterday afternoon returning to normal after a blackout knocked out power to two of its three terminals in the morning, but a backlog of flights meant there were delays for the rest of the day.

There was chaos as passengers formed queues hundreds of metres long as they tried to catch their flights.

Qantas spokeswoman Melissa Thompson says delays in the airline’s flights would vary for the rest of the day but will average out at around 45 minutes.

“There will be knock-on effect for the rest of the day,” Ms Thompson said.

“People can expect some delays of around 45 minutes but we will try to minimise them.”

Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Emma Stenhouse said the blackout occurred when contractors cut through a cable during construction work at the airport.

The power failure caused a half hour baggage delay in terminal three while terminal two, which caters for international flights, was not affected.
