Mexico LCCs Volaris and Viva set for mega merger
Two of Mexico’s top low-cost carriers are merging to create a major LCC group.
It will be a ‘merger of equals’ for Volaris and Viva.
The carriers will continue operating under their current brands independently, Reuters reports.
It says only the ownership structure will change.
They already have some synergy.
Both the airlines have all-Airbus fleets and fly to many of the same destinations.
“We expect the formation of the new airline group will allow us to realize significant growth opportunities for air travel in Mexico,“ said Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena.
The two airlines, along with rival Aeromexico each have about a one-third share of the domestic market.
The deal is expected to close sometime in 2026.
Volaris’ largest shareholder is Indigo Partners, which also controls US airline Frontier.
Frontier is itself reportedly in talks again for a merger with Spirit Airlines in the US.
