Mexico’s tourism revenue surpasses 2019 levels
Mexico has notched all-time record tourism revenues so far this year
Inbound tourism spending surpassed pre-pandemic levels in the first four months of the year, according to data from national statistics agency INEGI.
The country reaped $8.67 billion in tourism receipts between January and April.
It was 3.7% up on the same period of 2019, pre-Covid, federal Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco Márques said.
Over 90% came from air arrivals into the country.
International air arrivals spent an average of US $1,153 each, which is a 9.8% increase compared to pre-pandemic figures.
Speeding exceeded 2019 levels even though there were about 20% fewer international tourists visiting Mexico.
Torruco said 11.64 million tourists visited between January and April.
The tourism minister expects a total of about 40 million international visitors throughout 2022, which would is below the 45 million record set in 2019.
