MGM Grand Detroit handed big fine for gaming violations

State regulators have handed down fines totaling $350,000 to MGM Grand Detroit for several violations including serving alcohol to minors and insufficient supervision of a former employee who allegedly misappropriated almost $700,000.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced the fines for offences which it says date back as far as 2007.

Board Executive Director Richard Kalm said the delay in levying the penalties comes from a still active police investigation relating to the embezzlement case.

"The idea behind moving on these actions and moving on the fines is to modify behavior," he said.

MGM Grand Detroit is the busiest casino in Detroit with a 42% market share.

MGM Grand admitted the violations and accepts the penalties, attorney Peter Ellsworth said.

"We’re satisfied we’ve negotiated a fair result here," said Ellsworth.

MGM was fined $150,000 for allowing a former worker in the casino’s credit department embezzle $688,000.

Other fines include $100,000 for violation of contractor tender rules, a $62,500 fine for using unlicensed vendors, and a $12,500 fine for allowing minors to gamble and consume alcohol.

The minimum age for entering a Detroit casino is 21 years.

Michigan Gaming Control Board also said gambling revenues at the three Detroit casinos rose 6.6% in October compared to the same period last year.
