Michelin Keys go global for the first time with 2,457 Hotels recognized
What began as a modest European travel guide has transformed into a global benchmark for gastronomy and hospitality. Over the past two decades, the Michelin Guide has expanded far beyond its origins, embracing international destinations, digital innovation, and diversified services to serve travelers and food lovers worldwide.
The Guide’s global expansion picked up pace in the 2000s, marked by its 2007 debut in Japan, signaling its commitment to celebrate all culinary cultures. By 2025, it covers nearly 70 destinations across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East, with a clear ambition: to showcase the world’s gastronomic excellence.
Global website in 25 languages
In response to the digital revolution, the Guide launched a global website providing free access to its selections in more than 25 languages, complemented by rich editorial content. A mobile app transformed in 2020 the Guide from a print book into a must-have tool for travelers and food enthusiasts worldwide.
In 2023, the Michelin Keys extended the Guide’s expertise to hotels. This year it created the first global ranking of standout properties, setting a new standard of hospitality. Guided by independence, rigor, and high standards, the Keys offer singularity through expert curation. While it shows affinity via community events and editorial content. And practicality with tailored services for travelers.
Now, the Michelin Guide unveiled its inaugural Global Michelin Keys Selection, recognizing 2,457 hotels across the globe for outstanding stays. This latest edition followed the launch of Michelin Key distinctions in 15 destinations last year. To fully realize this project, Michelin Guide Inspectors evaluated over 7,000 hotels located across 125+ countries.
Four special Michelin Awards for hotels
In addition to the Michelin Keys, the guide introduces four Special Awards, recognizing properties for achievements beyond classic categories. They celebrate excellence and uniqueness in specific hospitality fields: Michelin Architecture & Design Award; Michelin Wellness Award; Michelin Local Gateway Award and Michelin Opening of the Year Award.
The Guide’s digital ecosystem now supports every stage of travel, from inspiration to booking. The website and app provide an independent selection of restaurants and hotels. It also offers editorial content including articles, videos, podcasts. Users find personalized tools like filters, geo-location, itineraries, and integrated booking.
Users enjoy direct booking at best-market prices, exclusive perks, and 24/7 tailored support. Today, 92% of users rate the service as “impressive” or superior to others.
The Michelin Guide’s influence extends to tourism and local economies. Studies show 74% of travelers consider its presence when choosing a destination. 76% would extend their stay for a recommended restaurant. And finally, 80% are willing to pay more for such experiences. Chefs benefit too: 82% report higher turnover, 60% recruit new talent, and 58% note improved staff motivation.
