Murder in Mexico creates tourist backlash
In Canada, a somewhat bizarre murder probe on the Yucatan Peninsula is stirring up a backlash against travel to Mexico.
When a Toronto couple was found in their hotel room with their throats slashed, it took Mexican authorities only 24 hours to declare the suspect was a professional.
The authorities also said the suspect had already fled Mexico to Canada.
That finding prompted Canadian newspapers to charge the murder was not being properly investigated.
“This case proves that many have long known: Mexico’s law enforcement and justice system are in dire need of reform,” said the National Post.
Talk show hosts also have taken on the issue, with some of them urging a boycott of Mexico.
Mexico is among Canada’s most popular tourist destinations.
Next to the US and the United Kingdom, Mexico is the top destination for Canadian tourists who spent $791 million there last year, according to Statistics Canada.
