New airport key to Thailand’s tourism future

Sunday, 28 Sep, 2006 0

Some of the statistics continuing to emerging from the opening of the new Suvarnabhumi Bangkok airport in Thailand this week demonstrate the Thai Government’s intention and commitment that the massive funds spent on the airport will secure the tourism future of the country.

It is reported that the first phase of the airport’s development will handle 45 million passengers annually arriving and departing off 76 flights per hour, while the airport will also handle 3 million tons of cargo every year.

By the time the final phase of the airport is completed some time in the future, the airport will be capable of handling 100 million passengers every year, an amazing statistic.

The Thai Government has made its quest for Bangkok and Thailand to be the aviation hub of the region very clear and the low key official opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport, today, is a major step forward in this quest further demonstrating their belief in its strategic significance to Thailand`s future.

The Guinness Book of Records like statistics are very impressive with the airport claiming the world’s largest passenger terminal at 563,000 square metres, the world`s longest runway at 75.3 metres by 4,000 metres long (which should be reassuring for pilots that it will be very hard to run off the end of it – sorry Qantas!), the world’s tallest control tower at 132.2 metres high and the airport also claims to have the most advanced aircraft navigation and guiding systems and facilities in the world.

It should be a delight to fly in an out of and any of us that have flown in and out of the previous airport will most certainly applaud that!
