New anti-terror technology at Heathrow
UK: BAA says new X-ray and search machines will help protect passengers
Technology aimed at keeping Heathrow at the forefront of the war against terror have been introduced at the west London airport.
BAA has introduced a three-dimensional X-ray machine and an “enhanced detection portal”, which should make it much more difficult for would-be terrorists to take guns or explosives aboard flights.
The X-ray machine gives a three-dimensional view of passengers’ luggage, while the detection arch incorporates a “wind tunnel” that blows vapours and minute particles from the passenger and analyses them within a few seconds. The two systems are currently being trialled at Heathrow.
Ian Hutcheson, of BAA, said: “I have high hopes for both these systems and subject to trials here I look forward to their wider introduction across our airports. This latest equipment shows we are constantly looking to enhance our security through these technologies. While no airport in the world can guarantee 100 per cent security, we are confident these new technologies along with existing measures keep BAA at the forefront of airport security.”
