New Canadian code for sustainable tourism
The Tourist Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) has unveiled details of its new “Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Sustainable Tourism.”
Said TAIC president and CEO Randy Williams:
“Canada’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines not only define the underlying principles and what we as an industry hope to achieve, but provide direction on how to implement them in practical terms.”
As defined by TIAC and Parks Canada, sustainable tourism is “tourism that is viable over the long term because it results in a net benefit for the social, economic, natural and cultural environments of the area in which it takes place.”
Parks Canada is responsible for 41 national parks and 150 national historic sites in Canada, according to its CEO Alan Latourelle.
The code has eight recommended guidelines with a focus on how to also achieve economic goals, he said.
Canada’s national parks and historic sites are a key tourism product, accounting for $425 million in expenditures by foreign investors each year, according to Mr Latourelle.
