New generation trains planned for 2013
Double-decker trains in the UK are under consideration by the government in an attempt to ease congestion on commuter routes to major cities.
The disclosure came as transport secretary Alistair Darling outlined plans for new generation high-speed trains due to enter service from 2013 on Midland Mainline, First Great Western and GNER routes.
He reportedly described the rolling stock as “ mean, lean and green” during a National Rail Conference in London.
The proposals include new high-speed trains for longer routes and double deckers for routes into busy stations such as Cannon Street and Waterloo in London, according to the Daily Telegraph.
New trains and a possible new north-south high-speed line were needed as part of plans to meet a possible 30% increase in passenger demand overe the next 20 years, reported The Guardian.
