New hotels adding luster to San Antonio conventions
Downtown San Antonio, which already has 11,000 hotel rooms, has five new properties that will add another 2,000 rooms by 2008.
That’s in contrast with 2001, when a PFK Consulting report found the city added the fewest rooms among all Texas markets.
San Antonio recently had a record second quarter in hotel rooms booked.
The first new property in the recent wave of building is the 265-room Hotel Contessa due to open in November. It’s all all-suite property overlooking River Walk.
The biggest new hotel planned for the area is the 1,000-room Convention Center Hotel, a Hyatt Corp. property.
The 34-story hotel is scheduled to be complete in 2008.
Said Janis Schmees, acting executive director of the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau:
“This most recent increase in hotel development will result in a more competitive overall package when pursuing convention business.”
