New South Wales to reduce tourism development red tape

NSW’s landmark planning reforms, approved by the State’s Upper House overnight, will help to reduce red tape for tourism developments and attract tourism investment, peak industry body the Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) said today.

TTF National Manager Tourism Investment, Evan Hall, said the planning reforms would encourage tourism development in NSW.

“These planning reforms are a step in the right direction for this state and will help to provide a catalyst for tourism investment,” Mr Hall said.

“The O’Neill Review into Tourism, announced by the NSW Government last week, identified the need for urgent planning reform to reduce duplication, minimise planning delays and restore investor confidence in tourism projects.

“NSW’s archaic and complex planning laws have previously hampered and discouraged tourism investment and put this state at a competitive disadvantage compared to Queensland and Victoria.

“Planning regulations for tourism projects are at best confusing, and at worst, dysfunctional, often involving multiple government agencies across local, state and in some instances, Federal Governments.

“The tourism industry is hopeful that the overhaul of the planning system will fast-track planning approvals and attract innovative investment.”

“TTF will continue to work with the Implementation Advisory Committee to ensure the reform process continues to stay on track.”
