New terminal to ease Dubai capacity crunch
DUBAI – A record 34 million passengers are predicted to pass through Dubai International airport this year
The airport – the world’s 10th largest by international traffic – is currently undergoing a US$4.1 billion extension to cope with the extra flights.
Passenger throughout reached 25.4 million between January and September this year compared with 21.3 million for the same period in 2006, according to Dubai Civil Aviation.
Since 2000, passenger numbers at the airport has risen more than 125 percent each year, leading to capacity constraints that will be alleviated when new facilities open in May next year.
The current airport has already outstripped its original capacity of 25 million passengers.
Terminal 3 and concourse 2 will enable Dubai International Airport to handle 75 million passengers.
Dubai is also opening World Central Airport at Jebel Ali which, once completed, will have six parallel runways, six concourses, and two terminals, and serve 120 million passengers by 2015.
