New tourism chief for Queensland
An AAP report says that Queensland’s peak tourism promotion body, Tourism Queensland (TQ), has a new chief executive.
Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said Anthony Hayes, who has been acting in the role since June, would hit the ground running.
“He has impressive credentials for the job, has great industry contacts and I was happy to support the board’s recommendation for his appointment,” Ms Keech said.
“Anthony is well respected by his TQ colleagues and the industry, within and outside Queensland.”
Mr Hayes, who beat a field of international and national candidates, came to TQ as the agency’s executive director for international operations in 2005 after a long history with Qantas.
He said he was delighted to be appointed and would ensure TQ was more responsive than ever to the needs of the industry.
“Tourism Queensland has a reputation as a market leader and we will continue to set the pace,” Mr Hayes said.
“We are at the creative frontier of digital marketing and we will also be working hard to increase international visitors to Queensland because that is where the real potential for growth lies.”
Former chief executive Ian Mitchell stepped down in June, only weeks after the resignation of TQ chairman Peter Wade.
TQ board member and former advertising guru Don Morris was named as Mr Wade’s replacement in late June.
