No surprise: man jumping out of plane not well
The family of a man who jumped out of a moving airplane as it prepared to take off gave an explanation of his conduct: a history of mental illness.
The man, identified as Troy Rigby, was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Police used a stun gun to subdue him.
The man started yelling he wanted to get off as a Continental Boeing 737 began to move. He ran to the front of the plane and banged on the cockpit door. He also bit a passenger trying to restrain him.
His sister, Merlene Rigby of Miami, said her brother had been diagnosed as a “bipolar schizophrenic,” according to the Associated Press.
“He never should have been on that plane,” she said. “He doesn’t travel because of his problem.”
The man was charged with battery, trespassing, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
