Norwegian Air hits back at critics

Friday, 05 Jun, 2014 0

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of flights to the US, much maligned Norwegian Air has hit back at its detractors in a statement that the carrier says "sets the record straight."

US airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) have asked the DOT to block Norwegian’s application to fly transatlantic services from London Gatwick.

ALPA says the sole reason Norwegian Air has set up a subsidiary in Ireland is to avoid more stringent labor laws in its native Norway.

The DOT is yet to make a ruling on Norwegian Air’s proposal.

Norwegian called the opposition "a frantic attempt at blocking competition, consequently preventing the American people access to affordable airfares to Europe and blocking the creation of new jobs in America."

The airline said it chose Ireland as a corporate base as the country had "decided to fully adapt the Cape Town Convention, which provides Norwegian with better financing conditions."

It complies with labor laws in every country it operates in and obeys all European safety standards, the airline said.
