Norwich saw the fastest growth in overnight hotel stays by domestic travellers in the UK last year, according to LateRooms.com.

Research by the online late availability hotel specialist compared bookings from 2006 and 2007 to find the UK’s emerging tourist destinations.

Norwich topped the chart by almost trebling the number of overnight stays booked last year – up 168% compared to 2006.

Not far behind was Durham which saw a 165% rise in bookings during the same period.

Canterbury, Sunderland and Liverpool also made the LateRooms top five with overnight stays more than doubling in 2007.

The company’s development director Tony Walsh said: “Our research reveals the UK’s emerging destinations for last minute breaks and shows a move away from more traditional breaks.

“People looking for nights away are no longer restricting themselves to the traditional UK tourist destinations such as the big cities, the seaside or well known beauty spots.”

The top 10 fastest growing UK destinations based on overnight stays booked in 2007 were:

Norwich                                 168%
Durham                                 165%
Canterbury                            124%
Sunderland                           117%
