Now departing: US Airways final flight

Thursday, 16 Oct, 2015 0
In just a few hours time, the US Airways name will be consigned to history.

The final chapter of an airline that can trace its history back to 1939 ends early Saturday when flight US 1939 lands in Philadelphia at 6:18 am.

It marks the end of a nearly two years-long merger process of US Airways and American Airlines.

Migrating to a single reservation is the final tricky task but American Airlines is confident there will be no impact on customers.

"We have really tested the heck out of everything," said Maya Liebman, American’s chief information officer.

"Our number 1 goal is to make sure customers have as seamless experience as possible," added Kerry Philipovitch, American’s senior vice president of customer experience.

The slow migration of systems has been a deliberate, long process, with a gradual integration over many weeks, rather than a risky one-time data dump.

American began moving over US Airways bookings in July and has hired 1,900 new airport and reservations agents to ensure things run smoothly.

All US Airways agents have been trained on American’s Sabre-powered reservation system.

The US Airways website will go dark at midnight, followed its mobile app on October 18.

Beyond this the only visible remaining reference to the airline will be found on the aircraft themselves

The repainting of all US Airways’ jets into American colors will not be completed until next year.
