Online travel giant MakeMyTrip lays off 350 workers
Indian OTA MakeMyTrip said it laid off 350 employees as the online travel giant struggles through the Covid-19 crisis.
Impacted workers were informed in an internal memo from CEO Rajesh Magow.
"It is undoubtedly the toughest decision we have had to take so far and it’s the saddest day for us as an organisation," it said.
"It is evident that the pandemic has changed the context and viability of some of our business lines in its current form. Keeping this in mind we have had to take this sad but inevitable decision."
These ‘extraordinary times’ will continue for some time with a relatively slow recovery, the company said.
Impacted workers will get leave encashment, mediclaim coverage until the end of the year and outplacement support.
India has just come out of a two-month lockdown impacting millions of tourism workers.
A recent BOTT Travel Sentiment Tracker report suggests as many as 40% of travel and tourism companies could be forced to shut down within the next three to six months.
