Orbitz workers being laid off after Expedia takeover

Monday, 23 Nov, 2015 0
Two months after completing the acquisition of Orbitz Worldwide, Expedia has announced layoffs at the Chicago based travel firm.

An undisclosed number of employees will go at Orbitz as Expedia restructures its business following the merger, it said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

It didn’t say how many would lose their jobs but expects to pay out up to $150 million on severance and benefits costs.

Some of the affected workers may be given new positions within Expedia, the filing said.

After completing the deal to buy Orbitz, Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company would cut any ‘overlapping jobs’ found within the two businesses.

Expedia Group has a global workforce of about 18,000 while Orbitz employed more than 1,500 as of the end of 2014.
