Orion Expedition leaders announcement
Orion Expedition Cruises adds a further dimension to the Antarctic experience
Don and Margie McIntyre are the principal expedition leaders onboard Orion’s two sold-out voyages to the Antarctic continent in summer 2006. These adventurers are well known as Australia’s “Antarctic Couple”. They are both intimately familiar with this area having spent more time at Cape Denison than any other person alive today!
In 1995 they chronicled an extraordinary year spent living together in a box measuring just 2.4 x 3.6 meters. Their home was chained to rocks at Cape Denison, a mere 400 meters from the 1911 base of Australian Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson – who dubbed the area the ‘kingdom of blizzards’.
To ensure everyone onboard Orion captures the true essence of the Antarctic, Don and Margie McIntyre (who developed the Antarctic itineraries for Orion), will share their experiences and vast regional knowledge, including that gathered from a further thirteen Antarctic expeditions.
Other expedition leaders joining the McIntyre’s include Swedish Research Scientist Dr Martin Biuw, retired US Navy Captain Don Walsh (a veteran of nearly 50 polar expeditions) and Rob McCallum, formerly a senior manager with the New Zealand Department of Conservation. He is an authority on the New Zealand sub Antarctic islands and the Ross Sea.
“Antarctic exploration cruises embody the spirit of Orion, appealing to those with an adventurous nature and inquisitive mind. These are true expedition cruises, with an edge, providing our guests with access to parts of the Antarctic continent generally only visited by explorers, scientists and researchers. Having Don, Margie and the other expedition leaders onboard will add a further dimension to the overall guest experience” said Sarina Bratton, Managing Director of Orion Expedition Cruises.
