New York tourism grows but international decline continues

New York City generated $84.7 billion in economic impact through tourism related spending last year.

However, international visitation is down year on year.

NYC’s annual tourism report saw 65 million visitors visit the city last year, which is up overall by less than one percent.

The tourism industry generated $55.6 billion in direct spending, and $7.5 billion in tax revenue.

The industry supports nearly 400,000 jobs.

Domestic visitation including overnight stays accounted for more than 52 million visits.

The top out of state markets are Boston, DC, the tristate area, Philly and LA.

International travel was down 3.2% fueled by unfriendly immigration policies and Canadians still staying away.

Still, the UK, Mexico and Italy saw tourist numbers slightly rise.

Last year, NYC Tourism + Conventions organized more than 1,500 meetings and events.

“Despite international declines, we saw growth across all our economic impact metrics: total direct visitor spending was more than $55 billion, which generated nearly $85 billion in economic impact for our city, flowing into hotels, restaurants, cultural institutions, retail and small businesses,” CEO Julie Coker said.

The report forecasts around 66 million visitors in 2026.
